Recently, I've been asked on Tiktok to share my skincare routine after sharing the story of when I moved out of my parents house at 21. According to many of my Gen Z followers, we're supposed to crumble after the age of 25-- barely recognizable and unable to function in any meaningful way! I kid, but it does seem to be a theme that comes up when I tell them I'm actually 37 years old. I can't blame them for these perceptions because we all know all of the expectations our society throws at women from childhood and into old age. Instead of appreciating the fact that not every one has the privilege to age, we embrace shaming and disappointment as we start seeing age lines around our eyes, and for me, right smack in the middle of my forehead making a very stubborn furrow.
Now, I'm the last person to judge those of us that choose to use Botox or any other aging intervention. I believe that it's your body, do what supports your wellness + happiness. I have been very curious about injectables and have been invited a few times to join in on the Botox fun too. But I'm just not there yet, and perhaps, I'll never be there. Right now, my aim is to take care of the skin that I have and love the new softness and soft lines that are showing up. And the way I do that is by using more plant-based skin care, oils and following the steps below!
My skin is what's considered 'normal' which means that it isn't dry or oily. I think the oiliest part are my eyelids and I rarely add lotion or oil to them. I always start with a good skin cleanser. In the morning I like to use a gentle cleanser and have been using Free and True's Marigold Morning Cleanser for over two years now and I love it. I think it's important to wash your face every morning! My go-to to wash for evenings has always been the Daily Facial Cleanser by Cetaphil and I haven't been able to find any plant-based replacements that do the job. I then wipe everything off with a warm silk round or washcloth and then add my Vitamin C Serum, which is also from Free and True Skin Care and/or the Ramblin Rose afterwards, it depends on whether or not my skin is feeling more dry or needs a pick-me-up! I make sure that everything is dry and soaked into my skin before I add my next step, which is always moisturizer. I really enjoy the Clarity Awakening Face Cream by Good Medicine Beauty Lab and have been using it for almost five years now! I love the tingle of this cream and although it's very thick it doesn't leave a heavy feeling and drys matte afterwards.
I'm obsessed with oils for body, hair and skin and I think that if you're going to invest in any of these products, start with an oil. Our skin absorbs oils better than lotions and though it would seem that they would clog pores or leave a greasy feeling, they do not! I go between my Mukama Botanica or Freedom Fighter, both are excellent and I really feel have made a difference in the texture and tone of my skin. Always be sure to spray a toner or leave your skin slightly wet before adding an oil for maximum absorption. My last and final step is using Tinted Moisturizer with SPF! And this is especially for my melanated followers, we should be using SPF too. Not only is it harder to find skin cancers on melanated skin but most medical literature and medical training is not centered on skin issues for those of us with more melanin. Protect your skin from the sun too!
I hope this little set-by-step was helpful and please be sure to let me know if you have any additional questions. I'd be happy to answer!
Abrazos, Keila
